They actually go on to speculate how alike them the lions are, wondering if they are orphans and if they have a surviving parent. They need a visit from the RSPCA as they're covered in marks from where Olaf was whipping them, and they're half-starved. We get a brief view of the lions down at the bottom of the pit. Hugo, Colette and Kevin are perfectly happy to join Olaf and the gang so they're sleeping perfectly well when the Baudelaires get up to set the plan (and hopefully the rollercoaster cart) in motion. I'm surprised they haven't exploded with anxiety! Plus there's all the other things they were already worrying about to continue worrying about. headquarters, and Sunny is worrying about how they'll all eat while they're on the road. We're told that Violet's been worrying about how she will adapt the mirror gadget into a fan belt for the car, Klaus has been worrying about finding the way to the V.F.D. Obviously the Baudelaires are planning not to be at all involved with Olaf or any of his murderous schemes, they're hoping to be riding into the sunset in a converted rollercoaster cart. Just last night, I was troubled by a decision involving an eyedropper, a greedy night watchman, and a tray of individual custards, and this morning I am so tired that I can scarcely type these worfs. The hays code was an era that I was always fascinated about in school and this remains a major focus in the film. What I found interesting is that The Celluloid Closetis it doesn’t shy away from these examples, but then also goes out of its way to highlight films and characters that actually had a healthy portrayal. Hollywood has had an interesting history depicting marginalized segments of the population often trading on stereotypes to elicit fear or laughs. To say there were - and often still are - problematic depictions of homosexuals in the movies is an understatement. From the earliest days of silent films to the turbulent years of the Hays Code to the (then) modern and somewhat healthier presentations, this film charts a unique historical cinematic journey. Based on Vito Russo’s 1985 book The Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in the Movies - the feature documentary version narrated by Lily Tomlin is a fascinating, angering, but also hopeful look at how the LGBTQ community was portrayed on screen. Mary Higgins Clark did a wonderful job writing Loves Music, Loves To Dance. There’s something to be said though, about the tension that this book derives because I definitely wanted to keep reading, even though I wasn’t necessarily adoring what I was reading. It was like someone randomly yelled at the author to be “more deep” in the middle of random scenes. The writing was watered down and the random bursts of purple prose would give me a sense of whiplash. I started feeling this from the second chapter. I guess my main issue with DO18 is the fact that I had so much hope for it! This author can do a lot of things with smut and often her books will call for the holiest holy water, but I was so stuck on the issues within this book that I couldn’t even enjoy that.Įverything felt way too rushed and underdeveloped. Right so, I guess I can say with some certainty that Kent’s books and I have a love-hate relationship. Saffron Kent has written one of my all time favourite romances, Medicine Man and I always do a little dance whenever she comes out with new material. This story had so much potential and I honestly could not have been more excited. *sigh* I guess I needed time to absorb this story as well as the level of disappointment I felt while reading DO18. “You know what happens when a thirty-four-year-old man watches a sixteen-year-old girl?” She deeply touched our hearts and will forever leave an imprint.Īudrey is predeceased by her husband David Doggett of Lewiston, as well as four siblings and a son Edward Gramlich.
